Born in Georgia, Trammell was a radical writer who practiced law and became a judge. In its 1884 obituary, the Atlanta Constitution wrote that "his chief literary work was 'Ca Ira,' a novel published about 1874, in which the author embodied views of the social, industrial and relations of mankind, that excited much comment. Judge Trammell was an earnest advocate of the common people, and at the time of his death was a Vice-President of the 'Workingmen's International Association.'" Trammell dedicates the work "to the WORKINGMEN, and to the memory of all who have ever suffered in their Cause, hoping that the energies of the living, and the inspiration of the dead, may unite to peacefully accomplish that Great Revolution to which all Humanitarians must look with the greatest concern, The Emancipation of Labor."
