In the original publisher's cloth binding, Externally, worn, with loss and lifting to the back strip. Light bumping to the extremities. Boards are lightly rubbed with a few light marks. Hinges are tender. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Front endpaper is detached but present. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down. Heath under various headings including "Omnium Gatherum", "Demonology & Witchcraft", "Old ways and New ways", "Nautical Dictionary", "The Art of Tormenting", "General rules for the art of tormenting", "Scenes in London" and "Sayings & Doings". Included in the 60 plates is a seemingly random plate "B.H.Y.A.M.S Spring Fashions 1845" an extra advert of its time perhaps? Hardcover no dust jacket. An old rebind of maroon cloth with original covers laid on to both boards in very good condition with a little rubbing to edges. Inside a little toning and some foxing throughout but overall very good for its age. A nice copy from the draughtsman, etcher of political caricatures and lithographer Heath. Hardbound. First. Dark blue library buckram boards (re-binding), 60pp, 60 BW etchings. There are 60 plates listed over the general 59 due to the title "page" really being more of a plate than anything. This book is a compilation of work by Henry Heath, a British caricaturist active between 1825-1850. The omnibus of work includes: the Omnium Gathering (with second series), The Art of Tormenting, Demonology and Withcraft, Old Ways and New Ways, Scenes in London, Sayings and Doings, and the Nautical Dictionary. Most deal with interpersonal relationships as opposed to being political, and all are rather funny. A quirky look into the mind of the early to mid-1800s. Good, ex-lib with bookplate and perforation stamp on right side of every plate. [60] leaves of plates. Oblong folio. Contemporary red cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Boards worn and darkened around the edges, neatly repaired. Spine neatly rebacked, original spine laid down. Bookplate on front pastedown. One leaf toward the middle torn down 3-4 inches from the top, along the plate mark. Internally clean. About very good.
