Beschreibung
Auction catalogue of 3-days sale (21-23 June 1965) of fine printed books and bindings from the collection of English book collector Major John Roland Abbey (1894 -- 1969). This is the first and most important of the renowned Abbey sales. Sotheby & Co, 1965. 694 lots offered and described in detail. With indices of books printed on vellum, binders and booksellers, and previous owners. Colour frontispiece plus 128 black and white plates and several facsimiles in the text. IMPORTANTLY, also included is a laid in leaflet of sales prices achieved, in £ and $ (at $2.80 to the £!) with buyers names. This is the hardback illustrated catalogue; an unillustrated paperback issue was also produced in conventional Sotheby wrappers. Hardcover small quarto, printed boards. (xii), 279 pp, original green boards printed in black, a near fine copy. Condition: fine. 1st Edition. Part 1, circa 290 pages, photographic plates. Uninscribed, unmarked, no wear. Publisher's original hardback binding; square and tight; contents sound and clean with no pen-marks. Not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Major J.R. Abbey was one of the great 20th century book collectors and his bibliography entitled "Travel in Aquatint and Lithography 1770-1860" published in 1956 in a limited edition of only 400 numbered copies remains the foremost standard reference work. 694 lots including Almanach Royal, Année MDCCXXXVII in Padeloup le Jeun binding; Johannes Angelus' Astrolabium (Augsburg, Ratdolt, 1488) bound for presentation to Ladislas VII Jagellon, King of Hungary and Bohemia; Appianus' Astronomicon Caesareum (1540); Aristotle's Ethica ad Nicomachum printed in Rome by Sweynheim and Pannartz in 1473; Aldus editio princeps of Aristotle (1495-98) in bindings by Grolier's last binder; Cochin' Voyage Pittoresque d'Italie bound for Madame de Pompadour; first edition of Hypnerotomachia Poliphili; a book in 16th century round binding; an Appolo and Pegasus binding.
