1874. [The Census of Ireland, 1871 - Area, Houses, and Population: Also the Ages, Civil Condition, Occupations, Birthplaces, Religion, and Education of the People. Province of Ulster. County of Armagh.] The 1871 census is the first in Ireland to resemble what we would consider a modern census. Like the previous reports for Ireland it includes updated figures for population, land (size and valuation) and houses, all given in their total county context, and also broken down to figures for every barony, town and townland. The baronies for Armagh are Armagh, Fews Upper, Fews Lower, Oneilland East, Oneilland West, Orior Upper, Orior Lower and Tiranny. However this report contains far greater detail about the population as it stood on the night of the 2nd of April 1871. The accommodation is classed from 1st to 4th in order of its standard. We are shown figures for hospitals, gaols and workhouses, ages of husbands and wives in relation to each other, people's occupations, army and police figures, numbers of foreigners, numbers of disabled, religious affiliations, education standards reached, literacy levels, levels of Irish and English, and figures for emigration. All of these categories are broken down in detail, and compared with figures from previous census'. Disbound, housed in protective file. First edition copy. . . .
