Decorated red cloth on beveled boards. Mild bumping to extremities. Penciled gift endorsement inside front cover. Clean and tidy throughout. Moderate spotting to end papers front and rear. 32 pages of publisher's advertisements at the rear. Complete with a full compliment of 12 full page, colour, lithographic plates. The annual weighs in the region of 1 1/2 kg and, as such will incur extra carriage charges for sale outside of the United Kingdom. The Chatterbox was originally conceived as a weekly paper for children in 1866, by the Rev. John Erskine Clarke. Initially weekly issues were collected and bound together privately. Later, possibly in the mid 1870s, it was decided to publish ready bound annual collections. Thus the Chatterbox Annual was born. The annual continued to be edited by Rev. Clarke and was produced in two formats. The less expensive had cloth spines and paper illustrated boards. These copies usually had publisher's advertisements at the rear. A more expensive format was produced with decorated cloth covers, and no advertisements. Rev. Clarke relinquished his editing duties early in the 20th century and the 1902 issue was his last, published without advertisements. Originally only published with black and white illustrations, the colour plates were added around the turn of the century due the advancement of lithographic technology.
