Softcover. 0 (illustrator). First edition; oblong 8 x 10 1/2; pp. [70], all double-leaved, several large fold-outs; blue wraps tied with a decorative string; title on white & red paper label pasted to front wrap; spotting and fading to margins of wraps; lower portion creased inwardly; nicks and cuts to spine and edge; illustrations and titles not affected; illustrated in black and red with titles and artists' names on facing pages; good to very good.A magnificent tribute to two of China's ancient forms of art, which have been modernized and re-introduced in the early 20th century. Contemporary woodcuts first emerged in the 1930s, while all other art forms were suppressed by the White Terror of Chiang Kai-shek. Stunning examples by various artists are found in the first half of the book. Paper cut-outs were used for generations for wall and window decorations. The first modern cut-outs were created in 1941 at the Lu Hsun Art Academy. The second part of the book is dedicated to representing this beautiful form of folk-art. 3.
