First UK Edition. Publisher's purple boards with black lettering to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine. Six illustrations by Lester Ralph. 362 pages + 15 page catalogue at the rear dated March 1909. Spine faded by a couple of shades with a small split at the tip of the spine at the very top and a couple of small areas of discolouration to the back board. Still quite presentable so about VG. No D/W. N.B: a cornerstone of crime fiction reprinted many times. Has the Lester Ralph illustrations (taken from the 1908 US first edition) which proves that this copy is the true first edition. N.N.B: basis of the stage play The Bat which led to several horror film adaptations under various titles. Rare in the UK first edition. Photographs/scans available up[on request.
