Original, vintage photographs. In various sizes. (1×) 83 × 54 mm, (5×) 91 × 61 mm, (1×) 128 × 88 mm, (3×) 178 × 129 mm, (2×) 238 × 165 mm. The Gordon Bennett Cup (Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett) is the oldest gas balloon race, created by James Gordon Bennett Jr, the American press baron and sponsor of motor racing and sport. With several interruptions, it is held annually since 1906. The starting point of the 1935 race was Warsaw (Poland) and the winner of the Cup was the Polish crew, Zbigniew BurzyÅ ski (Zbigniew Burzynski), and WÅ adysÅ aw Wysocki (Wladyslaw Wysocki), with the balloon SP-AMY Polonia II. They remained airborne for almost 58 hours while piloted their balloon 1,650 kilometers from Warsaw to Tishkino near Stalingrad (today: Volgograd, Russia). With this flight, they also beat world records in length and time frame. The two largest images show the lift off the winner, SP-AMY Polonia II, and US Navy, the winner of the 1932 cup. The three less large sized photos are labelled in Polish: "General view of the inflation of the balloons", with SP-ADS KoÅ ciuszko, the winner balloon of the preceding cup, that finished in fifth place this race; "Lift off the balloon Warszawa. Flew 1,280 kilometers in 36 hours, and finished in second place."; "Lift off balloon Belgica, that finished in third place" flew 1,455 kilometers in about 48 hours. The 128 × 88 mm sized image shows a ceremony related to the flag of Nazi Germany in front of the inflated balloon. The smaller images document the inflation and the lift off other balloons. Zürich III, Torun and one of the German balloons, by the swastika on its side, are recognizable. A scarce and interesting documentation of the early era of the Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett, one of the most prestigious events in aviation. . The 5 larger format images with the photographer, WÅ adysÅ aw ToczyÅ owski's stamp on the verso, the three smaller sized of them are labelled in pencil. The larger images are in fine condition, some of the small sized (91 × 61 mm) are slightly worn, overall in good, very good condition. Original, vintage photographs. In various sizes.
