The first edition of a pamphlet reproducing the speech delivered by renowned Scottish liberal politician, and founder of the Edinburgh Review Francis Jeffrey, Lord Jeffrey (1773-1850) supporting the recent abolition of the contentious Combination Acts, which had restricted labour organisations and trades unions, for which he rightly gives credit to Joseph Hume (1777-1855), who, in part, extended 'the great principle of free competition to the great market of labour' thus 'relieving the labourer, in the disposal of this his only property, from the irritating, unequal, and degrading restrictions of the laws against combination'.
