A good to very good first edition (1880) edition. Covers are good except for some stains on the front cover and suntanning to the spine. The pages are clean and crisp but they have a slight wave/warp to them. Some minor stains on the page edges. A little minor spine rub but the spine itself is straight and the binding is tight. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. 376 pages (complete). A sturdy, benign copy. Cunynghame was Commander of the Imperial forces in the Cape Colony. His time there was to be the end of his career. His management of the British forces during the Fengu-Gcaleka War (the last of the so-called Xhosa Wars) irked the Command in London, and he was removed from his post at the Frontier. More poignantly, he dedicated this book to the fallen at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. The imperial red boards have wear, scuffing, marks all about. The corners are a little knocked. The boards are defiantly steady and sure. The contents are mild-mannered. They have user marks, handling marks, ownership marks throughout. Page 103 has an open tear to the bottom corner (the text is unaffected). Nonetheless, the pages are sure, clear, companionable, certain, orderly. fk.
