Scattered by the uncontrollable violence of the new proletariat regime, the Polivanovs escape to the various parts of Russia, all but the son Dmitri, who has made his way into Switzerland. Concealing their identity, they assume whatever occupations are offered by the new government, slowly adjusting themselves to new and arduous modes of life. Natalya, the daughter, falls in love with a former nobleman, and both are sentenced to death for sabotage. Dmitri is believed to have lost his life in the World War, but has actually been inducted into the astonishing role in the Soviet regime.
