MASSIVE TOME. Illustrated by numerous examples selected from famous collections (paintings, drawings, coins & medals). Contains all 57 illustrations complete (as listed at front). The illustrations are frontispiece, 36 plates (some plates with mulitple illustrations, & 4 plates being in colour), plus in-text illustrations. All illustrations with printed tissue guards, as issued. The "ink stamps" which appear on some of the portraits are on the original illustrations. Includes preface, list of illustrations & owners, chronological summary, 9 chapters, appendix with Sir George Scharf on portraits of Mary (extract from the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries), plus index. Title page & half-title both printed in black & red. Decorative red initial at beginning of each chapter. Joshua James Foster (1847-1923) was an arts historian who produced a large number of publications relating to the history of art. He was born in Dorchester in 1847. Heavy stock paper. Printed at the University Press, Glasgow. 1/4 LEATHER. Bound in red buckram cloth backed by red morocco leather spine, large elaborate gilt coat-of-arms ("Maria Regina") design to front board, gilt border design along leather edge of front board, gilt lettering to spine, 4 raised bands, top edge gilt, printed endpapers. NOTE: A GOOD to VERY GOOD COPY ONLY. Old staining & associated soiling to entire rear board (& margins of final three leaves & final plate upper margin), sun-shading to front board, tissue guard at frontispiece detached (but present), some tissue guards with creasing & closed tears, mild foxing (including to some plates), light rubbing to spine, otherwise overall a clean tight solid copy.
