Author "Vicente Dubois Lardizabal (1746-1814) was a Spanish doctor who was born & died in San Sebastian. It is unknown where he studied medicine, however his youthful education allowed him to meet with Latin & French sufficiency, & throughout his life used the title of Doctor of Medicine. He began to practice in his hometown before 1769. In 1772 he became a doctor in the Real Compania Guipuzcoana de Caracas (The Royal Guipuzcoan Company of Caracas), but he never embarked. His first published work was Consideraciones Politico-Medicas Sobre la Salud de los Navegantes (1769). It was intended for sugeons who were shipped, & relies on a combination of the doctrines of Hermann Boerhaave & Andres Piquer, with the experience provided by physicians such as James Lind, Louis Rouppe, & Richard Mead, who was especially proficient in naval medicine. Three problems of health aboard ships concerned Lardizabal: ventilation (the proposed solutions show a good understanding of the physics of gases), the preservation of drinking water, & the abuse of drugs, especially purgatives."
