William Stubbs [1825-1901] was an influential English historian who founded the systematic study of English medieval constitutional history. This book is a historical study of English politics, scarcely complete in three volumes. Charterhouse is a public school (English privately-owned boarding school) in Godalming, Surrey, England. Originally founded by Thomas Sutton in 1611 on the site of the old Carthusian monastery in Charterhouse Square, Smithfield, London. This copy given as the Oliver Walford mathematical prize in 1907 and presumed in private hands since then. According to A. H. Tod's History of Charterhouse, published 1900, the Walford Memorial was a prize founded in memory of the Rev. Oliver Walford [1814-1855], usher of the School from 1838 to 1855, and Head of House and namesake of Verites. An interesting association copy: the student recipient, William Hugh Cowie Romanis FRSE MRSC FRCSE [1889-1972], was a 20th-century British surgeon and medical author. He was a pioneer of thoracic surgery in the 1920s. Romanis was the first son of Rev. Francis William Romanis, preacher to Charterhouse School. Bound by Bickers & Son, a publishing house founded in 1832, at 1 Leicester Square in London. The publisher was well-known for photographic illustrations, and publishing controversial authors in the areas of poetry, philosophy, and science. In 1940, the publishing house was destroyed during the World War II "Blitz" bombing, and in 2019 it was revived in America. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 008271
