Beschreibung
From 1927 through to 1957, this race was the toughest test of man and machine, Road Racing at its very best although some of the most demanding Italian 'Roads' some, hardly qualified to be called as such! Over 1000 miles for driver and navigator to blast flat-out through villages and over mountain passes that might and often did throw up the unforseen obstacles of the open road. Founded by Conte Maggi and close friends as their ultimate challenge, they competed and competed well, against the cream of Motor Racings Champions. In post war years Stirling Moss with Denis Jenkinson had perhaps their finest drive. Another name talked of always in the same breathe as 'Mille Miglia' is Piero Taruffi, who was a regular sine 1930 and finally in 1957, the last year the race was run, victory was his and his alone, as he carried no navigator, instead relying on his own incredible knowledge of 1000 miles of road ahead and reaping the benefit of reduced weight in the car. The day and the race were sad however, as dePortago and eleven others died in the crash that sounded the death-nail for this historic event. Taruffi hung up his helmet and gloves for ever, the task was finally done. Conte Maggi was greatly affected by the serious crash and death toll of his race and four years later died a broken man. 164 pages. Book and jacket in very good condition.
