A collection of fourteen volumes of the popular literary magazine edited by William Makepeace Thackeray. Under his editorial guidance the paper's large circulation peaked around 110,00. In 1871, the editing was taken over by Leslie Stephens.The first issue appeared in 1860, with a selection of articles on diverse subjects and serialisations of new novels. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'. In a half calf binding over marbled boards and new endpapers. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and a minor rubbing to the spine, boards, and extremities, minor scuffing to the leather. With some loss to the front board paper of vol. V and marking to the spine of vol. VI. Previous ownership inscription to the half title or title page, undated. With some offsetting to the title page of vol. VI. Internally, firmly bound.
