Beschreibung
Five volumes of the Cornhill Magazine, a popular monthly Victorian periodical edited by William Thackeray. With seventy four plates across the five volumes Five volumes of The Cornhill Magazine, dating from January 1860 to June 1964. This collection is comprised of volumes II, V-VI, and VIII-IX. The Cornhill magazine was a monthly literary journal containing articles on a diverse range of subjects, as well as poems and serialised novels. Although issues continued to be published until 1975, the magazine reached the peak of its popularity under the editorship of William Makepeace Thackeray between 1860 and 1870. This collection contains novels such as Anthony Trollope's Framley Personage, William Thackeray's Denis Duval, and the first appearance of George Eliot's popular story, Romola. As well as Thackeray's Roundabout papers, the volumes also contain poetry by Alfred Tennyson and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, alongside many entertaining miscellaneous articles. With twelve plates to volume II, collated and complete. The plate called for at page 273 can be found at page 257, and the plate called for at page 472 can be found at page 462. Twelve plates to volume V, five of which are folding, collated and complete. Twenty four plates to volume VI, two of which are folding, collated and complete. Fourteen plates to volume VIII, and twelve plates to volume IX, both collated and complete. In a quarter calf binding over marbled boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards and spine. Volume II is a little more rubbed to the boards than the other volumes, and is a little worn at the rear joint hear the head of the spine. Volume IX is also a little rubbed to the joint at the front board. The front hinge is starting in volume VI and the rear hinge is starting in volume VIII, however both are firm. Internally, firmly bound. Aside from a little foxing to the front and rear of the volumes, pages are bright and clean. Very Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 849N34
