Beschreibung
First edition. One leaf of thin paper folded to make [4]pp., measuring approximately 4½" x 6¼" closed. Irregularly trimmed, else fine. Styled as a letter to the American people, a July 4 announcement of the formation of a new political party. The National Party was established in Pittsburgh on May 29, 1896, branching off from the Prohibition Party during that party's convention. The leaflet announces the new party's principles and purposes in a 14-point platform. It strongly advocates women's suffrage and the breakup of monopolies, in addition to a firm commitment to Prohibition (which is point #1). It seems the founders (they claim 300 people from 27 states) didn't believe the Prohibition Party was doing enough to address social inequality, and the parties that they believed did (the People's Party is mentioned), did not support Prohibition. The document closes with a plug for Charles E. Bentley and James H. Southgate for the Presidency in 1896, and is signed in type by the Chairman and six members of the National Executive Committee. These include Albert M. Todd ("the peppermint king of Kalamazoo"), former Kansas governor John P. St. John, and the lawyer, activist, and journalist, Helen M. Gougar. The chairman of the party, L.B. Logan, was based out of Alliance, Ohio (his address to receive payment for copies of this leaflet). Even though Mr. Logan offered them 600 for a dollar in 1896, we have not been able to locate another copy of this rather fragile, but charged, little bifolium: "Silence in reference to such a violation of the principles of civil liberty [no suffrage for women] is a crime." A rare and ephemeral survival from a time of great political foment in the United States. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 457961
