Réfutation du célèbre ouvrage de l'Abbé Boileau sur les "Flagellans". Curieux ouvrage sur les disciplines religieuses et les Flagellants, fanatiques religieux des XIII et XIV° siècles, ainsi nommés parce qu'ils se flagellaient en public. Thiers s'oppose vivement à Boileau et défend l'usage des "disciplines volontaires". Il donne le ton dès sa préface : "On n'a guere vu de Livre depuis longtemps qui ait été moins bien reçu du Public que l'Histoire des Flagellans de M. Boileau. S'il y a des catholiques à qui elle a pu plaire, il y a de l'apparence qu'elle n'a pas déplu aux hérétiques & aux libertins ." Edition originale.
