Inner hinges cracking, somewhat leaned, discoloration to the spine and some wear to the top of the spine, generally a fairly bright, very good copy. Inscribed from the author to a family member, on the half-title leaf. Accompanied by a copy of the first Canadian edition (Toronto, Macmillan, [1901]), in a Houghton Mifflin binding of blue cloth, with the same binding design as the British edition. This Canadian copy is also signed by the author and another family member, but is lacking one plate and has some loose pages. A historical novel based on the memoirs of the Chevalier de Johnstone.
