325 pages. Illustrated with eight copper engravings each with tissue guard, including the frontis. This is the first American edition, issued with the same plates as the fourth London edition with preface by the American editor. This is the first one volume edition, the three previous English editions all published in two volumes. Frances Trollope's classic work is a harsh critique of American manners, or lack thereof, experienced over the course of a three year trip through the country, South to North, between 1827-1830, with some time settling down in the frontier town of Cincinnati. Her criticisms were especially sharp regarding slavery. The work was an instant success, rescuing her family from the poorhouse. Original boards with a later cloth spine professionally applied some time ago. Internal foxing ranges from light to heavy, is particularly heavy on most of the engravings. With An Introduction. New Materials. & Notes by Donald Smalley. 476 pages. paperback. V-103. Cover design by Milton Herder. keywords: History America Women Autobiography Paperback. DESCRIPTION - Upon its publication in 1832, Domestic Manners of the Ameri-cans instantly caused a storm of controversy. A sometimes scathing, often witty, beautifully written account of the foibles and failings of America as Fanny Trollope saw it, Domestic Manners was, however, roundly applauded across Europe. Banned in the U.S. for almost 100 years, it has since become a well loved as a piece of literary history on those shores, even amongst the countrymen, the children and grandchildren of those it once gently taunted. inventory #30779 Previous Owner's Name Penned in Front & A Few Penned Markings in Back, Otherwise Very Good in Wrappers. Soft cover. Zustand: As New. This is an undated reprint by "A Vintage Book" publishers. Dated 1949 on inside of book but this book does not have the typical browning of pages for a 1949 book AND it has a gift inscription on the inside front page dated 1972. I surmise that 1972 is about when this reprinted version came about. Excellent condition. Never read. "S"malley (PM). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1484360404326
