Beschreibung

Beschreibung:

Rare wartime early impression of the true first edition, published April 1940, in near fine condition. Issued in the uniform edition, using the same green boards and thick paper as the first edition, but with the standard uniform edition dustwrapper design. The first impression was published in July 1937; second impression in July 1938, third impression in October 1938, and this fourth impression in April, 1940. ***Near fine in green cloth-covered boards with black titles to the spine. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and faded. Boards clean and bright. No bumps. No tears to the cloth. Internally near fine with no foxing. Pages white and clean, including a very clean top edge to the page block. Contemporaneous wartime gift inscription and date in neat black fountain pen ink to front free endpaper: ' To Alf with best wishes from Henry, 24. viii. 1941'. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour printed dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing the original publisher's price of 3/6 net on a label to the bottom of the front flap. Head and tail of spine of dustwrapper slightly creased, nicked and rubbed. Small loss to head and tail of spine of dustwrapper. Very small pencil number '841' to top outer corner of rear panel of dustwrapper (could easily be rubbed out). No fading. No major chips or tears. The original dustwrapper is vibrant and bright. ***316 pages plus four pages publisher's adverts to rear. 190mm x 128mm. ***'Excellent --- in the best Christie vein.' [The Times]. 'One of Poirot's most brilliant achievements.' [Glasgow Herald]. 'This is Agatha Christie at her best.' [John O'London's]. 'She adds a terrier so fascinating that even Poirot himself is nearly driven from the centre of the stage.' [Manchester Guardian] - contemporary review quotes taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper. ***A fourth impression of the true first edition, complete in its original 1940 thin, fragile wartime dustwrapper in lovely bright collectable condition. A near fine copy and rare thus. Editions of Agatha Christie's works from this period in such nice condition are seldom found now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 6265b
