First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Original red and black marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, all particularly clean and bright. Page edges rather foxed, endpapers with only a couple foxing marks, heavier foxing on early and late pages (though the paper is high quality and sound), bookseller's small stamp on the bottom hinge corner of the fly-leaf, otherwise very good in the exceeding rare dustjacket designed and illustrated by the author. The jacket is very good, with very little soiling or wear, spine slightly darkened, title label faded a bit, but importantly much less than usual, still clear and light red, with a few very small chips and a few small tears repaired/restored professionally. The price of 7/6 is intact on the front flap. This copy has, as do all first printings, the noted "issue" point (on pages 168 & 169, respectively), the names "Martin Gaythorne-Brodie" and "Kevin Saunderson", later changed in the second printing (sometimes called second "issue") to the names "The Hon. Miles Malpractice" and "Lord Parakeet". This was Waugh's first novel (preceded by a poem and an essay on the Pre-Raphaelites, both privately printed), and was a remarkably assured fictional debut, marking the author as a vigorous new comic talent. It remains one of the funniest novels of the twentieth century. Waugh contributed the wonderful dustjacket and six interior drawings, and dedicated the book to his Oxford contemporary, Harold Acton. It is quite simply the scarcest of the five classic novels the author published before 1940, and aside from some age showing at the page edges, after more than 90 years truly rare in intact original condition.
