329 pages, plus 24 hand colored plates after J. Smit. Number 474 of 500 copies numbered and signed by the publisher. Green cloth covers are heavily rubbed, and worn along edges. Wear is more toward fore edge and spine still looks good. All lettering on cover remains good. Small worm holes on both boards, with a little damage to blank front free end page, half title, title, and dedication pages. Damage is in blank spaces and does not affect any lettering. Small institution stamp on blank front free end page. Small tears at top edge of title page and dedication page. Last blank leaf and blank rear end leave are separated from text block though remain tightly attached at bottom cover. Plates are very slightly darkened near edges. The contents clean and tight, publisher's green cloth with gilt title to the upper cover within ruled border, even fading to spine, some small chips to tail of spine. An important record of deer with fine hand coloured lithograph plates by J Smit. Seldom found in very good condition in the original cloth which is often badly faded. Green cloth, blue eps. 1898 London, 329pp, 24 hand colored plates of the deer of the world and profuse other illustrations, limited to 500 numbered copies signed by Rowland Ward. Lydekker was the foremost naturalist in Britain during the turn of the century. And although opinions on the various sub-species of deer vary, his work is unsurpassed even today. It covers the deer of Europe, Asia, North & South America. All of the deer species covered in this book. The hand colored plate books that Lydekker wrote are his most sought after items. Important and authoritative book. Very good copy in original green cloth binding, rebacked spine, a bit browned with age. No shelf wear, corners sharp, front and rear panel show some patina/discoloration. Over all the best copy we have seen in many years, keep in mind that about one third to half of all these books are now no longer in the original binding. Plates and pages in very nice shape.
