Legman, who characterizes this novel as a prime example of "pre-psychotic verbalization anad word invention"; Fowler concocts over 60 synonyms for the penis. Though well-paid as a journalist, Fowler's bank account was routinely vacuumed by his impecunious habits, which apparently led him to write this (as well as one other) delightful porn novel for a quick transfusion of green, possibly after he was fired in 1931 as Managing Editor of the New York Morning Telegraph and before he gained his first screenwriting credit in 1932: A Guy's Gotta Eat.
