First American edition. Four volumes. Very good condition, and scarce in the original cloth. With two portraits. The Diary covers some of the same terrain as The Memoirs of Count Grammont, which we have also listed, but from a quite different perspective: that of the aspiring, responsible government official, who was attuned to the joys and sorrows of city life, including intellectual life, and whose marital infidelities were comparatively tame compared to those of the idle aristocracy. Pepys meanwhile lived through and recorded the Great Plague of London, the Great Fire of London, and war with the Dutch Republic. Earlier editions of the Diary such as the present one were, of course, bowdlerized. Foreign orders for this multivolume set must be sent by Priority Mail with additional shipping charges thereto.
