Among the subscribers is the late lexicographer, John Walker, and Gilbert and Robert Burns, respectively brother and son of the poet. Murdoch, who was a close friend of Robert Burns the poet, is described on the title page as being a teacher of the French and English languages, author of a treatise on French pronunciation, and editor of the stereotyped edition of Walker's Pronouncing Dictionary.
