Mason, A. E. W. Dilemmas. Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1935. First U.S. edition. Octavo, pp. [i-ix] x [xi-xii] [1] 2-288 [289-290]. Original gray cloth, front and spine panels stamped in red, top edge stained red, fore-edge untrimmed, bottom edge rough trimmed, coated endpapers. A fine copy in very good or better dust jacket with light dust-soiling to rear panel; a nice copy of an attractive book. #1740. $75. Collection of two sketches about World War I, and twelve short stories, most of them criminous ("Tasmanian Jim's Specialties" is a clever tale about a pair of con men who get their comeuppance in an unexpected manner). Three stories qualify as supernatural. "Sixteen Bells" is a poignant and uncanny ghost story, a bit sentimental but with some good touches. "The Reverend Bernard Simmons, B. D." is a horror story set in Ceylon with a grim ending that leaves the door open for an explanation via sorcery. "Magic" is another story about the misfortunes and mistakes waiting for the English in far-flung colonies (south-central Africa in this case, now Zimbabwe). This tale of a bent romantic triangle brings an unscrupulous and clever colonial official into contact with even more clever natives who conspire with him to disrupt a failing marriage so that the official may gain the woman. The immediate goal is achieved but the ultimate goal is thwarted. This story presents vivid, imaginative scenes and should appeal to any connoisseur of the genre. The collection as a whole constitutes commercial-grade fiction: none of the stories are terrible, none great, but several are definitely above average. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 1740
