Beschreibung
A very sarce first edition of a pamphlet written against the penal laws and test acts that were in place in England, persecuting those who did not belong to the Church of England. A very scarce work. The first edition of this work. This work is a quarto. The signatures run as A-F4. ESTC citation number R3313. Collated, complete. 'A Discourse For Taking Off the Tests and Penal Laws About Religion' is an interesting working discussing the need to get rid of the test acts and penal laws that were in place in England in the late seventeenth century. The acts and laws were put in place to restrict Roman Catholics, imposing civil disabilities upon them, in an attempt to stop them from practicing their religion, and turn them instead to the Church of England. The author of this work was presumably Catholic, and so had been persecuted for their religion over the course of their life. This was an interesting era for religion in Britain, as James II came to the throne as was a Catholic, as opposed to the previous Church of England monarchs that had previously been at the head of Britain. This is an important and interesting work, as it shows the state of Britain during the religious turmoil in the lead up to the Glorious Revolution, which happened in November of 1688, in which James II was deposed. At the time that this work was published, James II had published his 'Declaration of Indulgence', which tried to establish a system of free religion in Britain by abolishing the penal laws. Written anonymously. Printed by Randal Taylor in London. A very scarce religious pamphlet arguing for the abolition of penal laws and the test acts. Disbound. Externally, the outer wraps age age-toned with some handling marks. Edgewear to the extremities to the textblock. Disbound, though each separate gathering is still attached. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with a couple of light spots and marks. Fair. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 656P17
