1968. Third impression (the first printing was in 1967). [viii], 112pp., many full-page black and white illustrations and illustrated endpapers by Bruce Franck. District Six is a former inner-city residential area in Cape Town, South Africa. Over 60,000 of its inhabitants were forcibly removed during the 1970s by the apartheid regime. The area of District Six is now partly divided between the suburbs of Walmer Estate, Zonnebloem, and Lower Vrede, while the rest is generally undeveloped land. This book is not a detailed history of District Six, although the emergence of the District is described. It is not a sociological survey, although its sections on skollies, gambling, shebeens and dagga are written after personal observation. It offers informed, affectionate and often amusing descriptions and stories of the background and the way of life of the people who lived together in the most interesting area of Cape Town. The book is bound in the original white boards with red titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with rubbing to the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the top edge is rubbed with some creasing. The bottom of the spine, bottom corners and top rear corner and bumped and nicked and the top front corner and top of the spine are more heavily bumped with small tears. There are a few small tears on the bottom edge and some larger tears on the top edge, including one of about 1/2" on the top front spine corner and another of about 1" on the top rear edge. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. First Edition. 112 pages (complete). A kindly copy. The dustjacket has a clear cellophane protective cover. The dj itself has some wear about edges, corners. The back cover has a small open wound. The spine has an open tear to the head. There are splatterings of shallow foxing. The dj is still comfortable, sure, evocative. The boards have storage and handling marks, wear about the edges. They are steady and sound. The contents have a vivacious joie de vivre. The contents and illustrations vividly give life to the Cape Town district (destroyed and demolished by the apartheid government just ten years or so after this book was published). The frontis and end papers have some blushes of foxing. The contents are clean, convivial, clear, genial, comfortable and generous. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services. 4to; original cream boards; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (viii) + 112; pictorial endpapers; black-and-white illustrations. Dustwrapper somewhat edgeworn, with earlier owner's tape repairs; earlier owner's bookplate to front free endpaper verso; occasional fox spot. Good to very good condition. 'This book . offers informed, affectionate and often amusing descriptions and stories of the background and way of life of the people of all sorts and conditions who, until the area was declared "White", have lived together in the most interesting area of Cape Town. They are on the move now, and it is fortunate that George Manuel, who has lived in District Six, and Bruce Franck, who has spent many brilliantly productive weeks there, and Denis Hatfield, who has known it for nearly thirty years, should have come together at this time to capture and convey its atmosphere before it dwindles (as one of them sadly says) into a suburb with a name instead of a number, and an aura of unrelieved respectability.'.
