The earliest translation of a children s book into Japanese. The author Naoomi Tamura (1858-1934) was a Christian priest, who graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1885 and received a master's degree in the Department of Psychology. The original of Guide for the Young belongs to Richard Newton (1813-1887), a famous American clergyman. The book is also important for its early use of unified Japanese, or Genbun itchi. The book is inscribed on the end paper: Miss Saku Ogawa, with love from her friend. E. P. W. Christmas. 1888 . Text in Japanese. 1 volume complete. 17.2x12.2cm. 182p. 9 B&W woodblock printing illustrations complete. Occasional stains on the cover & contents. Binding is a little loose.
