Spine chipped 1/2 - 3/4 inch at heel and crown, joints cracked, chipped, boards worn. Lacks endpapers. Hinges repaired with heavy paper. Moderate to light foxing in the text. B/w illustrations. Gray was 26 when the book was written; the final (ninth) edition was in 1887, and according to the Grolier American One Hundred, "this key work and the other works by him which grew out of it dominated the subject in America for 50 years."
