To understand the Greeks, we must see them as they were, and as they readily agreed they were, persons displaying the full range of human emotions without inhibition or pretence. Time and time again the ancient Greeks explained behaviour in terms of envy. Man, they claimed, was naturally envious, and envy they accepted as a fact of life. This book examines how the anthropomorphic gods of the Greeks led to the concept of divine envy, the ways in which both the Athenian and the Spartan constitutions allowed for the prevalence of envy among their citizens, popular belief in the evil eye, and the solutions to the problems posed by envy offered by philosophy and religion. The author uses comparative material about the Greek peasant today as well as a wide variety of ancient sources for this study of one of the most powerful of all human feelings. - Peter Walcot, a graduate of London and Yale Universities, has taught Classics since 1957 at University College, Cardiff, being appointed to a chair of Classics in 1973. Editor of the journal "Greece & Rome" and an active member of various professional and educational bodies, the author has been particularly associated with the development of courses for students whose primary interest lies in English, History, Biblical and Religious Studies and Philosophy His earlier books are "Hesiod and the Near East" (1960), "Greek Peasants" (1970) and "Greek Drama in its Theatrical and Social Context" (1976).
