Beschreibung

Beschreibung:

First thus - a first impression of the first William Heinemann Library Edition. Translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett. With a thirteen-page introduction by Edward Garnett dated January 1895 to the fore. ***Very good in grey boards and cream cloth-covered spine, with black bordered titles to the spine. All edges of text-block untrimmed (rough-cut) as is common with American-produced books - this edition dual published between Heinemann in London and Macmillan in New York, and using American methods of book-production and American sheets. The boards are clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine faded and slightly browned. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with just some light sporadic foxing to the prelims and last few pages. Very light offsetting to the endpapers. Interior pages otherwise clean, with no inscriptions. ***In a very good plain buff-coloured black-bordered dustwrapper. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just some small areas of loss at the extremities. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased, discoloured and rubbed. Spine of dustwrapper darkened. Back panel of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and discoloured. ***200mm x 138mm. xvii prelim pages including a thirteen-page introduction by Edward Garnett, dated January 1895, to the fore plus 290 printed pages. ***'Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev (9 Nov 1818 - 3 Sep 1883) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, poet, playwright, translator and popularizer of Russian literature in the West. His first major publication, a short story collection titled A Sportsman's Sketches (1852), was a milestone of Russian realism. His novel "Fathers and Sons" (1862) is regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction. While he was still in Russia in the early 1850s, Turgenev wrote several novellas (povesti in Russian): "The Diary of a Superfluous Man", "Faust", "The Lull", expressing the anxieties and hopes of Russians of his generation. Turgenev wrote on themes similar to those found in the works of Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but he did not approve of the religious and moral preoccupations that his two great contemporaries brought to their artistic creation. Turgenev was closer in temperament to his friends Gustave Flaubert and Theodor Storm, the North German poet and master of the novella form, who also often dwelt on memories of the past and evoked the beauty of nature.' (Wiki) ***The William Heinemann Library Edition of Ivan Turgenev's: "On The Eve", extremely hard to find now complete in its original 1920s dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 4158z
