Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

A second impression of the true first edition of Barbara Pym's second novel, published by Jonathan Cape in 1952 (the first impression appeared in March 1952 - as stated on the printer's page). ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards with red titles to the spine. The boards are clean with just very light marks commensurate with age and handling. Small crease to the fore-edge of the front board. The bottom of the spine is creased, but the corner tips are still sharp. Binding tight and square with just a slight reading lean. Edges of page block clean without any foxing - just slightly marked. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions - just some light sporadic foxing to the front and rear endpapers. Interior pages clean with no foxing. The paper stock is still white without any tanning. No creases or tears. ***In a very good original dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 12s. 6d. net, and with "Recommended by the Book Society" stated on the front flap. The dustwrapper is virtually complete without any chips or tears, just some very slight loss at the top and tail of the spine. Very small chip to the top edge of the back panel. Also some light rubbing and creasing to the extremities. There is a small dark mark on the front panel (please see scans). The back panel is very clean, which is unusual as it is mainly a white background - just some light browning at the top edge. Also unusually, the rear inner flap is blank, with no author photo or biography. ***256 pages. 205mm x 135mm. ***'"Delightfully amusing", said the Manchester Guardian of "Some Tame Gazelle", and Barbara Pym's new novel invites the same compliment. The scene is London, and the story is told by Mildred Lathbury, a clergyman's daughter, one of those excellent women who tend to get involved in other people's loves, and whose benevolence is sometimes exploited by their friends. Mildred is a friend of the bachelor vicar and his sister, and takes an active part in the life of the parish. The arrival of the Napiers, a married couple of about her own age who take a flat in the same house, enlarges her circle of acquaintances and leads to unforeseen developments. Mildred is extremely observant, with a rare sense of character, and naturally humorous, whether she is speaking of other "excellent women", or the emotional or social agitations in the parish. Further afield, she has a chance to observe the behaviour of anthropologists quite as keenly as they observe that of primitive communities. Looking back, the gratified reader of this exquisite comedy remembers a great variety of characters, all true to life, and all seen through Mildred's sharp but kindly eye. ' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A second impression of the true first edition of Barbara Pym's second novel, in very nice original condition. "Excellent Women" was Barbara Pym's most successful novel, and went into this second impression. Both impressions are extremely uncommon in any condition now. A collector's copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
