With a frontispiece, sixteen pages of photograph plates, and two folding maps to the rear of the book. Collated complete. An account of the British territories in East Africa, intended as a guide for prospective colonisers, and future developers. Topics discussed include the physical geography, native peoples such as the Swahilis, the Masai, Somalis, and Nandi, vegetations and animals, slavery, the Uganda railway and more. Sir Charles Eliot was a British colonial administrator and commissioner for the Protectorate of British East Africa, now Kenya. He wrote several publications intended to encourage colonisation, and was a leading diplomat in the initiation of the white supremacy policy in British East Africa. The half title page is present, alongside sixteen pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. In the publisher's original, full cloth binding. Externally, smart with some shelf wear to the edges. Fading and bumping to the spine. Marks to the boards. Front hinge is starting but still firm. Rear hinge is strained but still attached. Internally, binding strained but still generally firm. Pages age-toned but otherwise generally bright and clean. Ink mark to page 210. The odd handling mark throughout. Scattered spots throughout.
