Beschreibung:

First Edition of John Steinbeck's epic Salinas Valley saga infused with a heavy Cain and Abel vibe. Source book for the iconic mid 1950s film of the same title starring James Dean. A first state copy with the original $4.50 price intact on the front flap of dust jacket, the author photo with a facsimile Steinbeck signature on the back cover of the jacket, the use of "bite" (later corrected) on line 38 of page 281, and the "printed in the U.S.A. by H. Wolf Book Manufacturing Co." statement along with the "First Published by the Viking Press in September 1952" statement on the copyright page. Green cloth, 602 pages. The book has a bit of tanning of the page edges and a previous owner name blacked out on the front endpaper, otherwise minimal sign of use. The dust jacket has edge wear including a chip at the top of the front cover and a chip at the heel of the spine. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 014457

Soft cover. Zustand: As New. 1st Edition. As new condition color illustrated softcover wraps. Includes About the Author and Letter from John Steinbeck to Pascal Covici. The right front cover edge contains a 1/2 inch indentation, the volume is otherwise in new condition. (see photographs). First Edition, First Printing of the Centennial Edition. "The Salinas Valley is in Northern California. It is a long narrow swale between two ranges of mountains and the Salinas River winds and twists up the center until it falls at last into Monterey Bay." - from the rear outer cover. "In his journal, John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book" and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the full of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. Adam Trask came to California from the East to farm and raise his family on the new, rich land. But the birth of his twins, Cal and Aron, brings his wife to the brink of madness, and Adam is left alone to raise his boys to manhood. One boy thrives, nurtured by the love of all those around him; the other grows up in loneliness, enveloped by a mysterious darkness. First published in 1952, East of Eden is the work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love and the murderous consequences of love's absence. A masterpiece of Steinbeck's later years, East of Eden is a powerful and vastly ambitious novel that is at once a family saga and a modern retelling of the Book of Genesis." - from the inner front cover flap. "A novel planned on the grandest possible scale. One of those occasions when a writer has aimed high and then summoned every ounce of energy, talent, seriousness, and passion of which he was capable. It is an entirely interesting and impressive book." - The New York Herald Tribune. "A fantasia and myth.a strange and original work of art." - The New York Times Book Review. "A moving, crying pageant with wilderness strengths." - Carl Sandburg. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. True First Edition / First Printing of this accompanying volume to what may be John Steinbecks greatest work, East of Eden. This edition was released in a limitation of 600 copies, not numbered or signed. In blue cloth in slipcase. Missing the original glassine that cover the book inside the slipcase, though in this sellers opinion the glassine usually detracts from the quality of this book by nature of being brittle and easily succeptible to heavy toning. The book itself is in excellent condition. Binding is solid, tight, square. Interior is clean and free of marks. The first glossy photographic page has some waviness from production, not from any kind of wear or damage. The rear free endpaper has some light creasing and ruffling, but not bad. Otherwise no wear inside at all. Slipcase is nice, well intact and sturdy. There is some heavy toning around the edges of the case, but otherwise clean and sharp. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. Steinbeck, John. East of Eden. New York: The Viking Press, 1952. Octavo. First trade edition, first printing. In original lime green cloth boards with green titles to the spine and original unclipped dust jacket. Presented with a new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell case. Presented is a first trade edition, first printing of John Steinbeck s East of Eden. Published in 1952 by Viking Press, this book is in its original lime green cloth boards, with green title to the spine, and original, unclipped dust jacket. In this classic retelling of the story of Cain and Abel, Steinbeck writes of two multi-generational families in California s Salinas Valley. East of Eden was first published in September of 1952 by Viking Press in a limited edition of only 1,500 copies, all signed by Steinbeck. Published the same month, this is the first printing of the first trade edition. It states First published by The Viking Press in September 1952 on the copyright page with no statements of subsequent printings, with the year 1952 on the title page. A key identification point, this book has bite on page 281, mistakenly changed from the original word, bight, during proofreading. The book is presented in its original dust jacket, which is unclipped and has Steinbeck's photo on the rear with no blurbs. East of Eden is considered one of Steinbeck's most ambitious works and a classic of modern American literature. Steinbeck claimed the novel has everything in it I have been able to learn about my art or craft or profession in all these years. I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this (Salinas Public Library, 45). CONDITION: Very good condition. 8vo. Original lime green cloth boards, with the spine lettered in green on brown background. Small stain at the foot of the spine. Original unclipped dust jacket . Dust jacket spine and extremes are sunned, light staining to the front panel and minimal edgewear. Dust jacket is protected with new mylar. Internally, pages are healthy, with only light toning. With a past owner s bookplate. First trade edition, first printing, with bite for bight on p. 281. Book is housed in a new archival quarter leather and cloth clamshell case, with raised bands, gilt titles, and tooling to the spine, and an inlay of the dust jacket to the front. Book Dimensions: 8 5/8" H x 6" W x 1 7/8" D, Slipcase dimensions: 9 3/4" H x 7" W x 2 3/4" D. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers BK0966
