16mo (9cm x 13cm), unpaginated [4]pp. Single leaf, folded, as issued. First issue of the first printing, with "To" on the front wrap (instead of "-To-"), the watermark of Towgood, and the word "my" in Roman (rather than italic) characters on p. [3], line 12. A fresh, clean copy, very near fine, with some old erased pencil markings to the front wrap; barely noticeable. Carroll, Lewis [Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge] ANEASTER GREETING TO EVERY CHILD WHO LOVES `ALICE.'[Oxford: for the Author, 1876] Single leaf, foldedto four pages, as issued. First edition, firstprinting, and rare in the correct first printing.Fine copy. Williams & Madan once described thefirst printing of this little leaflet as "therarest of the Carroll items excepting the firstissue ALICE." When a few more copies came tolight, he revised his earlier statement. Whenexamples are found they are usually MacMillan'spost-1880 reprints or later printings done forDodgson. This copy has all the measurements andreadings (including the critical "my" in Romantype face at line 12 on the third page) and is onlaid paper bearing E. Towgood's watermark. Whilelater printings done for Dodgson are sometimesfound on Towgood paper, none of the later versionsshare all of the characteristics of both the textand paper. Copies were intended to be insertedinto the specially bound presentation copies ofTHE HUNTING OF THE SNARK, but Dodgson also gaveaway individual copies to his young friends. Thischarming letter vividly captures how children seethe world, touches on Dodgson's belief that thelaughter of children are at least as holy anutterance as mournful prayers muttered by adultsin churches on Sundays, and he ends his missivewith the Easter-appropriate sentiment that deathleads to a bright and joyous afterlife not unlikethe dawn that greets every child at their windowwhen they awaken each morning. A happy memento ofDodgson's affection for the young readers of hismasterpiece. Williams, Madan, Green 116. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 12520
