A very scarce first edition of the collection of the home economics periodical 'The Economist and General Adviser', complete here as two volumes in one. The first edition of this work. A very scarce work and an original and early source for this material that became much more widespread in the Victorian period. Two volumes in one. This work is an octavo, with the signatures running as [1], B-Z8, 2A-2L8, [1], B-Z8, 2A-2K8, [2L6]. Both volumes illustrated throughout with in text woodcut vignettes. Volume II with a frontispiece. Bound without the frontispiece to Volume I. 'The Economist and General Adviser' provided a variety of useful advice on housewifery and husbandry, as well as a selection of general advice and on the annals of gulling. The advice also discussed alcoholism, agriculture, medicine, landlords and tenancy, brewing, baking, shopping, travelling, marketing, and more. These types of home economical works were very popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth century, due to the rising literacy rates in England. There were many books and periodicals aimed to teach and aid lower and middle classes in housekeeping. The periodical changed its name to 'The Housekeepers Magazine and Family Economist' for 1836 only. The issues printed in these two volumes were all issues published under the name 'The Economist and General Adviser'. The issues in the first volume run from Saturday 22nd May 1824 with issue No. 1, to Saturday the 25th December 1824, with issue No. 32. The issues in the second volume run from Saturday 1st January 1825, with issue No. 33, to Saturday 6th August 1825, with issue No. 64. Prior owner's ink annotations to the rear free endpaper, being a quotation from 'The Cook's Oracle'. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to the boards and spine. Small surface cracks to the spines. Light bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink annotations to the rear free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with the odd spot. Chip to margin of pages 89-93 of Volume II, not affecting text. The occasional ink annotation to the margin. Very Good.
