SYNOPSIS: The seventeenth century saw the beginning of the new scientific era. Free from the shackles of constant reference to the opinion of ancient philosophers, mankind in the western world was able to cast his net wide and sample the catch as the spirit moved him. The scientific approach of today was born. Such new-found freedom was bound to have other effects besides increasing man's knowledge an insight into the universe around him. It produced a number of noble minds to respond to the new challenges, minds to which we are indebted even today. Of these, one of the greatest was certainly that of Edmond Halley. - and - Edmond Halley is now remembered primarily for the comet that was named after him. In his own day he was famous not for this (there was no mention of the comet in the obituary notices which followed his death in 1742), but for his influence on his contemporaries, his scientific work, his crucial role in the publication of Newton's Principia, and his classical scholarship. The time in which Halley lived was the beginning of the new scientific age, and his contributions to it were varied and great. As a young man he took a naval ship across the Atlantic in order to make magnetic charts. He traveled widely in Europe and for a time was a Special Ambassador for the Queen. He formed a public company for salvaging wrecks; invented a diving helmet and carried out diving operations; wrote treatises on the trade winds; and was the first man to prepare tables of life expectancies. In addition he carried out duties for the Royal Society and corresponded with many eminent scientific men of the day. At the age of 66 he was appointed Astronomer Royal and boldly set about planning a 19 year series of observations of the moon--typical of him, he carried out the whole program. Halley was a wit, an excellent correspondent, and a man who liked to live well and enjoy his friendships. This exceptionally through and entertaining biography displays the many interests of an extraordinary man of his times. Colin A. Ronan was born in Chiswick, London, England in 1920. While working towards his M.Sc. at the University of London, he was a senior staff member of the Royal Society of London and had access to a wealth of unpublished material on Halley. Now a freelance author, broadcaster and consultant, Mr. Ronan is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Editor of the Journal of the British Astronomical Association. You have spent time carefully selecting which copy of a book to purchase (Thank you for choosing ours!), often based on its described condition. Bearing this in mind, we carefully package your purchase using:
While we often re-use shipping materials, we only do so with clean materials that are worthy of the job. We believe in the second "R" in "Reduce, Re-use, Recycle" when it comes to shipping, but only if it does not compromise your purchase.
Choosing the most appropriate materials suited to your purchase, we package up your parcel, taking the time to do everything we can to ensure its safe and secure delivery to you. Attention is paid to protecting corners and boards of hardcover books and ensuring that paperback books cannot be curled or folded while in transit. To ensure that no moisture damage occurs while in transit, we make sure that a plastic, protective barrier is a part of your package, either by using a Poly Mailer or by plastic bagging/wrapping your book(s) if a cardboard box is to be used for shipping. No loose edges or flaps are left on the outside of packages to ensure smooth flow and safe journey through postal system sorting and scanning equipment. An Invoice and Packing Slip are always safely enclosed with your book(s), so that should an unfortunate incident occur to exterior labelling and/or packaging, postal employees can identify the rightful owner of the contents and complete delivery. We try to think of everything!
We then choose one of the various shipping services offered by Canada Post to meet your chosen shipping timeframe. While not all services include a Tracking Number, if the one that we choose to use does, we enter this number into the Order Details and/or email our customers this information, so that its delivery progress can be monitored, if customers choose to do so. Packages that are shipped including a Tracking Number also include Insurance. If we choose to ship a package using a service that does not include a Tracking Number and Insurance, it is only when it is not economically feasible to do otherwise.
