Slightly frayed fore-edge of back cover has been rapaired (pasted with thin paper strip from the inner side), most likely spine has been also repaired; internally perfect. Marie Under (1883-1980) was one of the greatest Estonian poets. From 1917 Under belonged to the famous poetry group Siuru, which advocated on the eve of Estonian independence new literary movements, such as expressionism and futurism. In 1917-1918 were published her first poetry collections "Sonetid" and "Eelõitseng", which made her famous exciting admiration and protest. Estonian literary public of that time was not accustomed to such courageous, too personal, uncommonly forthright poetic expression. Under stressed joyful, sensual and challenging impressionist love poetry on the background of the War of Independence. After the First World War, expressionist German poetry had a great impact on her. Poetry became influenced by realism, symbolism and expressionism. Her works have been translated into many languages. Book s Art Deco cover design created by Nikolai Triik (1884-1940), who was an Estonian Modernist painter, graphic artist, printmaker and professor. His work displays elements of Symbolism and Expressionism. Triik is among the most important artists of the beginning of the 20th century, whose work led to a breakthrough in Estonian art, because his creation brings together both nationalist aspirations and international influences.
