Published in October 1844, the book was initially banned by the local Saxony censors and 250 copies were confiscated, but the ban was soon lifted as the book was deemed too absurd to be dangerous. A ban throughout greater Prussia would remain until the end of the century. Despite the bans, the book became a sensation that provoked vigorous debate. It would have significant influence on Karl Marx and other challengers of modern society s various constructions, and is a foundational anarchist text.
