18mo (155 x 95 mm), full marbled calf, gilt-stamped spine in five compartments with four octagonal floral devices and gilt-stamped red lettering-piece. [i-iv], v-xii, [xiii-xv], xvi-xix, [2], 22-126 pp., 5 engraved plates including frontis. Plates signed "Seymour sc" (Joseph Seymour). CONDITION: Good, crack along upper back of spine, small scratches on front and back cover, lacking front free end-paper; contents good. The first Worcester edition and the first American book printed on wove paper, in a lovely early American binding. This is Smith's second volume of poetry, from the Sixth London edition. Dard Hunter describes it as the "first book to be issued in America on 'wove' paper in which the paper is mentioned" and quotes from Thomas's preface: "The making of the particular kind of paper on which these Sonnets are printed, is a new business in America; and but lately introduced into Great Britain; it is the first manufactured by the Editor." Only the text is printed on wove paper; the illustrations are on laid paper. The present example is also of interest for ownership inscriptions by two women readers Sally Hare and Maria Matilda as well as a possible third [Bess Bingam?].
