Beschreibung
8vo. An exceptional Piece of 19th-century Chicago, Civil War, and Women's history, with laid in provenance linking this piece directly to the family of Eliza Chappell Porter. This 1892 1st Edition documents the life on one of the 19th century's most influential, if unheralded, women. Eliza Chappell Porter aided wounded Union soldiers during the Civil War, aided runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad, managed the efforts of the U.S. Sanitary Commission at Chicago, educated American Indians at Mackinac island, and became the first public school teacher in Chicago, at Fort Dearborn. Laid in to this historic piece are three pieces of ephemera related to the funeral of porter. The first is an envelope with a card announcing an address to be given by her husband, The Reverend Jeremiah Porter, inside. On the envelope is written in red ink - "To place in Auntie Porter's Memorial". The second piece of ephemera is a manuscript letter from Eliza's son, James W. Porter, dated February 4, 1888, addressed to his cousins, thanking them for their condolences after the loss of Eliza. The letter covers three pages on two leaves and is signed by James at the end. The third piece of ephemera is the funeral card for Eliza and dated January 1st, 1888 at Santa Barbara, California. There is a gift inscription on the front endpaper of the book, possibly also related to the Porter family. It is a presentation of the book "with love, Mr. H. P-", possibly Henry Porter, another of Eliza's sons, and dated 1893. Grey cloth with titling in gilt to spine. Square tight binding. Clean interior. Light bumping to binding edges. Gilt titling somewhat faded. Presents handsomely in a clear archival mylar dust jacket. Overall, an incredible piece of Women's Civil War and Educational history. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 17923
