The first number of Wyndham Lewis' short-lived "review of art and literature", 'The Enemy', a magazine which ran for three issues. This number one was published in January 1927.Illustrated with one colour plate, and four monochrome plates.Lewis founded this magazine, and wrote the majority of it, in order to put across his views for "serious unpartisan criticism" of society.This issue is primarily taken up with Lewis 'The Revolutionary Simpleton', though it also includes 'A Note on Poetry and Belief' by T. S. Eliot, 'The Position of Beethoven in the Modern World' by J. W. N. Sullivan, and 'Giorgio di Chirico' by W. Gibson.Including, loosely inserted, an advert for this number, and a letter on The Arthur Press headed paper referencing the issue of the second part, dated September 27th 1927.Twelve pages of adverts to the front.Collated, complete. In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, generally smart, with edge wear, heavier to the front wrap. Light handling marks to the wraps. Small stamp to the head of the front wrap.
