Rare first edition of this book, the basis of which, according to the Preface of 1857, originally formed part of "A Manual of Domestic Economy". Illustrated with numerous wood engravings, showing equipment, techniques, livestock carcases etc. The 425-page text is complete except for parts of 2 leaves of the wine recipes (most of leaf 309-10 and a small part of leaf 313-14. The text is tight and generally in good condition, with occasional light age-browning and very minor wear to some blank margins. Early owner's crest and inscription on front blank end paper. The original binding of leather-backed boards, with gilt titles and decoration on the spine, is secure, the spine leather worn with some loss top and bottom and the outer (only) hinges cracked.
