PROVENANCE: Cardinal Emilio Bonaventura Altieri (1590-1676, created Pope Clement X in 1670), arms on binding. | The binding is most likely to be Roman; it has some tools in common with bindings executed for Urban VIII in the 1630s-1640s (in particular the outer borders and the tool used to create the lace fans in the corners). As the arms are stamped in silver on a gold shield and partly obscuring the cardinal s regalia surrounding the arms, it is possible that a number of copies were bound for presentation, and the arms of each individual superimposed later. | Woodcut printer s device on title-page, engraved armorial illustrations in text, 2 folding engraved plates by Stefano della Bella. [LACKING the portrait] | BOUND WITH | [ALESASSANDRO STUFA] | Esequie della maestà cesarea dell imperadore Ferdinando II celebrate dall Altezza Serenissima di Ferdinando II Gran Duca di Toscana. | Florence: De Massi and Landi, [1637], half- title, engraved title-page, engraved portrait of the emperor, 3 folding engraved plates, all by Stefano della Bella. | 2 works in one volume. [1-2 (title and blank verso)], 52pp [8 armorial plates, partly in text, the folding plate is bound twice but with different signatures] LACKING the portrait + [4 (title and blank verso, dedication page, errata on verso)], 60pp [folding engraved title page, folding engraved portrait of emperor, 3 folding plates at rear]. [The second part of 40pp not bound in]. 4to (216x155mm.). Contemporary Roman (most likely) tan morocco elaborately gilt in a post-fanfare style with fan-shaped inner corner-pieces, central arms of Cardinal Altieri stamped in silver over a gilt cardinal s shield (originally with a blank centre), spine elaborately gilt in compartments, gilt edges, traces of red silk ties, resewn.
