Édition originale peu courante de cette première description sérieuse du parler lorrain, dans laquelle Oberlin évoque tour à tour l?usage de la langue française, son usage par les campagnards, les variations de village à village et le « caractère de la prononciation ». Arthur Benoit commentait ainsi l'Essai : "Un associé de l?Institut, mon ami le savant Oberlin, a imprimé un Essai du patois lorrain du Ban-de-la-Roche, qui est assez conforme à la langue française du XVe siècle, comme le patois allemand du voisinage se rapproche de l?allemand tel qu?il était parlé il y a trois siècles. Le peu d?intérêt que présentait le sujet traité par Oberlin est racheté par l?agréable variété d?anecdotes et d?observations dont il l?a parsemé. («Description des Vosges», Annales de la Société d?Émulation du département des Vosges n° 71, p. 242).
