Beschreibung:

A smart first edition of this classical work on garden design by Sir George Sitwell. First edition. A detailed commentary and celebration of the garden styles of Tuscany, Rome, and the Italian lakes. Sitwell became a keen designer of gardens after studying the topic in Italy. This work includes chapters on: the revolt against formalism, gardens of Italy, the landscape garden, town gardens, order and variety, water features, and much more. Written by Sir George Reresby Sitwell, a British antiquarian writer and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1885 and 1895. In the original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and the odd small mark to the board. Light fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting predominantly to the first and last few pages, as well as the fore edge. Very Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 884T5

First edition. 8vo. viii, 109, [1], [2, ads] pp. Publisher's pictorial cloth; small tear to head of spine, some toning and spotting to covers, endpapers foxed, bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown First edition of Sir George Sitwell's classic celebration of the gardens of Tuscany, Rome and the Italian lake district more philosophical treatise than manual of plant care and practical garden design. "Before the final overthrow of the Picturesque in the twentieth century, English Romantics looked once more to Italy, perceiving in its decayed villa gardens a certain kind of landscape poetry. Perhaps the most Romantic analysis of Italian villa gardens was by the early-twentieth-century English aesthete Sir George Sitwell (1860-1943), who devoted an entire chapter to its analysis in On the Making of Gardens" (Rogers, et al, Romantic Gardens, p. 30).
