[x], 340 pp. Bound without first and final blank. Text within printed borders. Woodcut initials an head and tail pieces. Engraved frontispiece portrait. Beautifully bound by Bedford in full navy blue morocco. Covers paneled with triple gilt fillet borders and floral corner devices. Densely gilt spine compartments. Spine lettered in gilt. Gilt board edges and dentelles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Previous owner William Strutz's small bookplate on front pastedown. Chemised and housed in quarter morocco slipcase. Overall, a very clean, excellent copy. This is the first complete edition of Bacons's famous 'Essayes' and the last to be published in his lifetime. "Of Bacon's literary, as distinct from his philosophical and professional, works, by far the most popular and important are the 'Essays.' These, in their earliest shape, formed part of a very small octavo volume, published in 1597, and were ten [essays] in number. Finally, the book in its present form, and containing fifty-eight essays, was published in 1625, the year before Bacon's death. This greatly enlarged edition may be regarded as a storehouse of the practical wisdom gathered during its author's lifetime, a life singularly rich in opportunities of such accumulations" (D.N.B.).
